What are some unexpected vacation home expenses?
Q. I am thinking about a vacation home about 3 hours from my home. Do I have to get a caretaker? Also what are some unexpected vacation home expenses?

A. I have two houses one is a vacation home. I have a groundskeeper for my rental and a cartaker for the vacation home. He makes sure pipes don't freeze in the winter and he does the general winter close down. He snow plows in winter and mows in the summer. He checks for leaks and frozen pipes and things going awry. He moves a car in and out of the drive to make it look like we come and go and he leaves varying lights on to mix it up and give the impression you never know when we are there. Also I have a complete inventory of the contents in the event of an emergency. Also you can notify the local police/ state troopers/ law enforcement to let them know it is empty and they keep an eye too. good luck

What is the best vacation for me and my girlfriend?
Q. I am 20 and he is 19 and we have been together for 3 years now. So I want to surprise her with a vacation this summer in 2011 but i really don't have any idea what are good vacations for us. I have thought of a cruise because she has never been on one and its pretty easy and cheap. Help me please!

A. Vacations are great but the more complicated they are the more stresses a couple tend to have. You don't need that. You have the best idea, A Cruise will do. They do all the work and you'll have comfortable quarters with on ship activities and ports of call. The best cruises in my humble opinion is the less ports the better the cruise. So choose carefully. Enjoy your time and relax. It will give you and your girl needed time to unwind and even get to know each other more. That's a good thing. Have a good one

What are some good vacation rental sites for booking a vacation property?
Q. My wife and I just retired and are planning a U.S. vacation tour. We are wanting to know the best way to book vacation rentals throughout our journey. We haven't picked any states to travel to yet, but would like to visit most if not all of them. In the past we have used KeyVacationRentals.com, but just wanted to see what others are out there. We also would like to only book from vacation rental site. Thanks for your suggestions!

A. I've been using Owner Direct Vacation Rentals for several years now, and I've always had a great experience both in finding the perfect place(s) to stay, and with their customer service reps... they're the greatest! I'd have a look around at Owner Direct Vacation Rentals and just start picking places along your route. It sounds like a great way to plan a vacation! I've actually done that myself, on a smaller level, with just two different places lined up one after the other, and it was just great. It's so much nicer arriving at a vacation home, than it is arriving at a hotel... so much more relaxing. Hope this helps!

Things to do in New Orleans: Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival are world famous events, but New Orleans hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year: www.nola.com/festivals The Saint Charles Streetcar is the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world and is a "tourist attraction" in its own right. Where should a go on vacation when I get back from deployment?
Q. I'm deployed in Afghanistan at the moment. I just got back from my mid-tour leave in Las Vegas and now I'm planning for my vacation I am going to take when I get back, sometime in the January-March timeframe. Here's what I am looking for: I want to go somewhere warm, somewhere RELAXING. I am not looking to hit up a new club every night or anything like that. I am in to just unwinding, taking in scenery, being somewhere I've never bee, somewhere unique, etc. Price isn't going to be a huge issue, but I am not looking to spend more than $5000 on a week long vacation. It can be anywhere in the world, I just want something new/fun/relaxing. Any ideas?

A. Find an out of the way Caribbean Island. Don't do the touristy ST Croix, hit somewhere like St. Johns island. It is fairly inexpensive to stay there and you can take a ferry to other places like St Thomas and St Martin to party and shop.

How do you choose a vacation destination?
Q. I would like to plan for a little vacation in 2008. And there are so many places. I think 1 week would be enough. Anybody would like to share their vacation experience? Where did you go? What did you do, etc. It's for me and maybe a friend or mom. I'm in my late 20's, but I'm not planning on doing anything adventurous. I just need a little getaway. Feel free to edit your answers. I will keep checking. Thanks.

A. This is a very vague question, but I'll do my best to help you. First & foremost is cost. Are you on a strict budget? Do you want some place warm or cold? Are you a beach nut or a snow skier? Because it would take a novel to answer your question accurately and to it's fullest possible extent, I will focus on a place that would probably suit you best considering the weak dollar. First of all, if you would like to stretch your dollar as far as it will go and have a wonderful time (and by the way, I have no idea how old you are which could also affect this response) plus guarantee warm weather even in the winter then I would suggest Mexico. Almost any of the popular destinations is fine. Cancun is a lot of fun as is Puerto Vallarta.… [cont.]

A. You need research this topic a little bit more. We Americans are workaholics. We don't even use the vacation time we have available. I work in HR and the statistics are frightening in regards to how little time we actually take off work compared to other countries. I don't think it's a question of companies offering more vacation time, it's an issue of workers actually taking off. Most people I know have their laptop and Blackberry wherever they go, so people never really "leave the office" when the office goes with them. It would be an individual company decision to offer how ever many vacation days they choose to offer, however most companies that I know of aren't offering more than 4 - 5 weeks. Some union companies… [cont.]

Can a previous employer collect an overpayment of vacation hours 6 months after leaving the company?
Q. My husband and I took a 3 week vacation this past summer. Prior to leaving on our trip he sent in his letter of resignation, upon our return he would be accepting another job at a different company. His last paycheck from his previous employer was basically ALL his vacation pay... So, NOW, 6 months later he just received an email informing him that they, by mistake, made an overpayment of vacation hours and they are asking us to repay a fairly large sum of money. Do they have any legal recourse?

A. Disclaimer: although i am a lawyer, i am a criminal lawyer and this is totally not my cup of tea. But I did some research into the relevant case law and statutory authority on point and this is what I came up with: The claim against your husband would be for unjust enrichment. The question is whether he received something that he did not earn. Under CA state labor laws, vacation time VESTED is the same as wages and pursuant to labor code section 221: The law says: No taking back wages earned and paid: "It shall be unlawful for any employer to collect or receive from an employee any part of wages theretofore paid by said employer to said employee." Heck I could go on and on but don't go to Punta Cana unless you like boring all inclusives in a town that doesn't have a town nor any culture whatsoever. How does Paid Vacation work for Salary workers?
Q. When a company lists the total compensation for a job they often list paid vacation as a dollar amount. Say your a salary worker and getting $800/wk, and the paid vacation is listed around $6000/yr. How can you earn $6000/yr for vacation if your salary and get the same pay each week regardless? Am I missing something? Do you actually get paid "more" while on vacation?

We'll have another one in the Spring - one week and then summer. I usually teach through the summer. Summer school starts at 7:30 am and ends at 12:00. I still have time to do what I want to do. Summer school lasts through early July and I have about 6 weeks before school starts again. I find that enough time for me to get rested. In addition, we have our sick and personal days.

A. It's pretty nice here in Italy in October and not so crowded as the summer months. There are a lot of good festivals in Italy then including the Eurochocolate Festival in Perugia - the first Sunday features a contest of professional sculptors creating works of art from big blocks of chocolate, the shavings go to the crowd, the Duck Festival in San Miniato in Tuscany (the duck races are unique), Bardolino Wine Festival on Garda Lake, the Rice Festival in Isola della Scala just south of Verona, the Bologna City of Food festival, the Verdi festival in Parma, and many others. Of course, all the usual tourist attractions are available too.

A. I booked mine through roadtoitaly.com Check them out, perhaps you'll find what you're looking for there. They have custom options. I booked a tour for 2 weeks around northern part of Italy and it included land and air fare - portorage, taxes, airport transfers, etc. Made my trip hassle free and easy. They have great tours such as Cosmos, Globus, and Tafalgar. If you scroll down, you'll find more European tours. You can have something very intense or something light in terms of constantly walking and looking. But they are tours. If you want a vacation - as in rest time - this is probably not it. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Go out in the garage, climb up into the attic and get out all the seldom used camping equipment. Then, after you have removed all the camping stuff, take into the living room and set up the tent with your sleeping bags, etc. You may have to go outside to find enough rocks to build your fire pit, but place it near the tent so you will not get cold during the night. Go to your local convenience store and pick up enough wood to last through the night. Then return home, turn your air conditioner down to 60 degrees.
